Wondering if ADHD coaching is right for you? This guide will explain what ADHD coaching is, what it isn't, and what you can expect from the sessions.

What ADHD Coaching Is (and Isn't)

If you're someone who has been to therapy a few times (like me), you might be wondering how ADHD coaching is different to things like talking therapy, CBT, or other ways of "treating" ADHD.

ADHD coaching focuses on finding ways to work with your brain, rather than against it.

It's all about figuring out methods and systems for the challenges you may face because of your ADHD, rather than trying to squash you into the neurotypical (aka, non ADHD) way of doing things.

An ADHD coach can help you:

  • Set goals, both personal and professional

  • Figure out the best ways to reach those goals

  • Build planning and management skills

  • Handle impulsive feelings

  • Improve motivation levels

  • Build organisation skills

  • Improve your memory

  • and more!

There are some things that ADHD coaching isn't too.

It's not therapy, and it's not a "quick fix". I won't be giving you direct advice, but instead, the tools and space to help you figure out things on your own (with some guidance).

Advice can be helpful for a specific situation, but the purpose of coaching is to help you handle unique situations that are thrown your way, on your own, even if you haven't encountered them before.

It's sort of like the old proverb of "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" .*

Coaching is like the "teaching you how to fish" part. It gives you the tools to work with your brain in a bunch of different situations.

*Sorry vegans for this example (myself included).

Benefits of ADHD Coaching

There are a few benefits to ADHD coaching, including

  • Personalised Support

  • Accountability

  • Building Skills

  • Improved Self-Esteem

Personalised Support

ADHD is different for everyone, whether that's the challenges you face, the way your ADHD shows up in day to day life or the strengths it gives you. Getting one-on-one support from a coach who understands ADHD will help you understand your own ADHD.

Accountability

ADHD coaching involves setting weekly goals to help you overcome challenges you face because of your ADHD. Knowing that your ADHD coach will be checking in with you each week to see how you're getting on with these goals will help you get them done.

What if you don't complete your goals? Then your coach will work with you to understand what didn't work and how you can set yourself up for success next time.

Building Skills

People with ADHD often struggle with executive functioning skills - self awareness, problem-solving, motivation, impulsivity, memory and emotional regulation, which is because we can have up to a 30% delay in these skills.

You may struggle with all of these areas, or maybe just one or two.

My ADHD coaching is always done with these skills in mind and includes sessions based around each of them, helping you to take control of these areas of your life.

Improved Self-Esteem

Coaching is not about giving advice. Its about gently guiding you towards solutions that will work for you and your brain.

This means you'll feel ownership over the changes you make in your life and your solutions will be tailored to you specifically.

Coaching also helps you to understand that there is nothing wrong with you, it's just that you need to approach some situations in different ways.

Who Can Have ADHD Coaching?

ADHD coaching is great for people who have an ADHD diagnosis, but it's also great for people who are awaiting diagnosis, or who think they might have ADHD and want to get coaching but don't want to pursue a diagnosis.

There's no right or wrong time to get ADHD coaching, it's really about what suits you.

The Coaching Process

My ADHD coaching starts with a 30-minute, no obligation chat about the challenges you're facing and how ADHD coaching can help you. This helps you see if ADHD coaching is for you and if you connect with your coach.

After this initial call, you'll have 6 weekly 1-to-1 ADHD coaching sessions, which are an hour each. Each session will focus on different challenges ADHDers face, how these challenges show up for you and I will guide you on how to deal with those challenges.

Once you've completed 6 weeks of coaching, you'll have the skills and confidence you need to handle whatever life throws at you - even if its something we didn't handle in coaching.

You might want to have more than 6 sessions, which works too. Everyone is different!
